11-Jan-2020 -- Em janeiro de 2020, tirei umas curtas férias de uma semana, e dediquei o início dessas férias a tentar visitar quatro confluências no nordeste de Minas Gerais, ao redor da cidade de Teófilo Otoni.

Saí de casa em Montes Claros no sábado, 11 de janeiro, por volta das 8h. Peguei a BR-251 até a cidade de Salinas e, de lá, peguei a BR-342 até a cidade de Araçuaí, onde parei para almoçar, após viajar por cerca de 330 quilômetros e atravessar o rio Jequitinhonha nas proximidades da cidade de Coronel Murta.

Após o almoço, segui viagem em direção à primeira confluência da viagem, a 17S 42W. Segui por mais alguns quilômetros até iniciar o trecho em estrada de terra, de 16 quilômetros, que estava em condições muito ruins, com ladeiras extremamente íngremes, nos quais o carro teve grande dificuldade para subir. Parei o carro a 1.100 metros do ponto exato.

Iniciei a caminhada, subindo uma trilha bastante íngreme, montanha acima, que segue até 230 metros do ponto exato, em um local com uma bela paisagem. A partir dali, tive que sair da trilha e tentar encontrar um acesso à confluência, que se localiza no fundo de um vale coberto por uma floresta muito densa. Além da dificuldade representada pela vegetação, o relevo também era muito complicado, uma vez que a descida do vale era extremamente íngreme.

A melhor opção que eu encontrei para tentar chegar ao ponto exato foi seguir uma cerca de arame farpado, que descia até o fundo do vale, em direção à confluência. Porém, não consegui andar mais de 10 metros, devido à floresta extremamente densa e cheia de espinhos, que arranhava meus braços. Cheguei a apenas 180 metros do ponto exato, mas, por ali, realmente, estava extremamente difícil prosseguir.

Voltei para a área aberta, e fui contornando a montanha, tentando encontrar um acesso mais fácil ao fundo do vale, mas fui me distanciando cada vez mais do ponto exato e não consegui nenhum acesso. Tanto a vegetação densa quanto o terreno muito íngreme eram dificuldades muito grandes para chegar ao fundo do vale. Mesmo caminhar na área aberta estava bastante complicado e cansativo, devido à necessidade de atravessar as voçorocas, erosões profundas provocadas pela água da chuva. Depois de uma hora e meia procurando uma alternativa viável, e já bastante cansado, acabei desistindo desta confluência. Subi novamente a montanha, com bastante dificuldade, até a trilha pela qual eu vim, e fiz o caminho de volta até o carro.

Aparentemente, o melhor meio de acesso a essa confluência, em uma nova tentativa, é seguir a cerca de arame farpado, que foi a primeira tentativa que fiz, já que ela permite um apoio seguro na descida íngreme do vale. Porém, para enfrentar a mata densa e os espinhos, é necessário o uso de luvas grossas e blusa de manga comprida. Uma outra opção talvez seja seguir o fundo do vale a partir da estrada, ao invés de subir a montanha para depois descê-la, como eu fiz, embora essa opção possa significar enfrentar uma mata muito densa por uma distância maior.

O visitante anterior a essa confluência cita uma trilha que segue direto ao ponto, que eu não encontrei e não sei se ainda existe. O fato de ele ter feito a visita antes do período chuvoso também pode ter influenciado no grau de dificuldade enfrentado naquela ocasião. A propósito, chama a atenção o fato de que a vegetação dessa região torna-se completamente diferente após as chuvas de verão, fato que pode ser comprovado comparando-se as fotos das duas diferentes visitas. É interessante que minha nova tentativa de visitar essa confluência seja feita na período de seca.

Após desistir dessa confluência, e vendo que não daria tempo de tentar uma segunda confluência nesse mesmo dia, fiz o caminho direto até a cidade de Teófilo Otoni. Quando anoiteceu, eu estava quase chegando à cidade. Hospedei-me um hotel, onde passei a primeira noite das férias.

11-Jan-2020 -- In January 2020, I made a short vacations, one week long, and dedicated the beginning of this vacations to attempt to visit four confluences in northeast of Minas Gerais state, around Teófilo Otoni city.

I left home in Montes Claros city at Saturday, January 11, about 8:00. I caught BR-251 highway up to Salinas city and, from there, I caught BR-342 highway up to Araçuaí city, where I stopped to have lunch, after travelling by about 330 kilometers and after crossing Jequitinhonha River near Coronel Murta city.

After the lunch, I went ahead to the first confluence of the trip, the 17S 42W one. I headed some more kilometers up to start the dirt road leg, 16 kilometers long, which was in very poor conditions, with extremely steep ascends, in which the car had a lot of hardness to win. I stopped the car 1,100 meters to the exact point.

I started the hike, climbing a very steep track, ascending a mountain, which went up to 230 meters to the exact point, in a region with beautiful landscape. From there, I must left the track and try to find an access to the confluence, which lies at the bottom of a valley covered by a very dense forest. Beside the hardness of the vegetation, the terrain was also very complicated, because the valley descending was extremely steep.

The best option that I found was try to arrive at the exact point following a barbed wire fence, which descends up to the bottom of the valley, in direction to the confluence. However, I didn’t managed to hike more than 10 meters, due to the extremely dense forest and with a lot of thorns, which are scratching my arms. I went up to only 180 meters to the exact point, but, by there, really, was extremely hard to go ahead.

I came back to the open area, and started to round the mountain, trying to find an easier access to the bottom of the valley, but the confluence turns more and more far and I didn’t find any access. Both the dense vegetation and the very steep terrain were very big hardness to go up to bottom of the valley. Even hiking in open area was very complicated and tiring, due to the necessity of cross gullies, deep erosions caused by rainwater. After one and a half hour searching a viable alternative, and already very tired, I gave up the confluence. I climbed again the mountain, with a lot of hardness, up to the track, and made the way back to the car.

Apparently, the best access to this confluence, in a new attempt, is to follow the barbed wire fence, as I made in my first attempt, because it grants a safe support to the steep descend of the valley. However, in order to face the dense forest and the thorns, it is necessary to wear thick gloves and long sleeve shirt. Other alternative is perhaps to follow the bottom of the valley from the road, instead of climbing the mountain and descending it, as I made, although this option maybe faces a very dense forest by a longer leg.

The previous visitant of this confluence cited a track that goes straight to the point, which I didn’t find, and I don’t know if it still exists. The fact that he made his visit before of period of rains can had also influenced the degree of hardness faced in each visit. By the way, it is remarkable the fact that the vegetation of this region turns completely different after the summer rains, fact that can be verified comparing the photos of both visits. It is interesting that my new attempt be made in dry period.

After giving up of this confluence, and seeing that there wasn’t enough time to try a second confluence in the same day, I made the straight way to Teófilo Otoni city. When the night fell, I was almost arriving at the city. I checked in a hotel, where I spent the first night of my vacations.
