25-Jul-2000 -- The amateur radio station DL0OMR at the Ottmar-Mergenthaler-Realschule at Kleinglattbach also operates on VHF where distances are measured on a calculation based on the Maidenhead Locator System. This locator JN48LW showed that we are only a few kilometres away from 49°N and 9°E.
Thus, for the school year 1999/2000 we planned to locate the Confluence 49N 9E. Also, we wanted to make it known to the public. Using a GPS, the pupils found the confluence 49N 9E on Monday, 17 January 2000 for the first time. Before the group began to design a big information board to be shown at the confluence point, the pupils built a large LED-illuminated information board, which is now on steady display at our school.
On the 25th July 2000 the mayor of the town Sachsenheim, Mr. Stein, unveiled the pupil-made information board on the confluence point in the presence of several newspaper photographers. Pictures of the Confluence were published in the newspapers.
There is easy access to the Confluence by using walkway #9 of the "Schwäbischer Albverein".
Coordinator's Note: Later investigation showed that the information board is located about 55 m north of the 49N 9E confluence, as defined by the "WGS84" geodetic system. That means, it is likewise not located at the 49N 9E confluence, as defined by the German "Potsdam" geodetic system. The reason for this misplacement may be the influence of "Selective availability" being still in use during the first months of 2000, or that it has been placed intentionally beside a long-distance hiking trail.
