#1: Looking west to the confluence with N34 indicated

(visited by mtn-man (Greg))

18-Feb-2001 -- This is an interesting confluence. It is located in the Coosa River in Alabama not far from the river edge. I had seen the location on the aerial photograph on Terraserver, and printed it to have as a reference. I have included it as picture 5.

To reach the confluence I went into the Forest River Apartment complex. Driving to the back, I could see the river. I parked near the Information Center, grabbed my GPS and my boots and started to the river. I headed to the point where my GPS read N34°00'00.0" and looked west. I was in a muddy area next to the river where a runoff stream comes into the river. I am sad to say that the area has a great deal of trash, as is evidenced in my photos. Photo 1 shows a close up with the N34 line noted at the top. You can see the funeral home to the left, and a white building by the boat launch area to the right. Photo 2 shows my GPS reading at the location. I would estimate that I was about 20 yards east of the exact confluence.

I went to the other side of the river to take photo 3 and 4. Photo 3 shows the apartment complex at left, and you can just make out the old trashcan from photo 1 on the river edge near where I took photo 1. For photo 4, some ducks happened to be coming down the river, and I photographed them as they were near the actual confluence. You can see the trashcan better in this photo. Photo 5 is the aerial photo of the area, with some of the landmarks noted. There are two faint "+" symbols in the image that mark the exact confluence.
