02-Mar-2001 -- Durante uma viagem recente à cidade de Cabo Frio resolvi visitar esta confluência. O ponto exato fica na Ilha de Cabo Frio (também conhecida como Ilha do Farol), próximo à cidade de Arraial do Cabo.

Chegar na confluência foi uma verdadeira aventura pois, além do fato de ficar em uma ilha, a confluência está cercada de dunas de areia muito fina e uma quantidade imensa de minúsculos espinhos que dificultaram bastante a chegada.

Porém, estando tão próximo, resolvi encarar o desafio e consegui chegar até lá acompanhado pelo meu filho Victor, de nove anos (no dia do seu aniversário!). Desci do barco com água até o pescoço e por pouco não molhei a minha máquina fotográfica e o GPS, o Victor me seguiu de salva-vidas.

Utilizei um GPS Magellan MAP 410 para achar a confluência com EPE (erro estimado de posição) de 3 metros. O ponto exato estava apenas a 350 metros de distância, porém tivemos que escalar duas dunas e quanto mais perto chegávamos do ponto, mais espinhos tinham no chão (e nós estávamos descalços, obviamente).

Tive que deixar o Victor para trás nos últimos metros pois se tornou impossível caminhar sem pisar em meia dúzia de espinhos de cada vez, mas cheguei lá. Tirei fotos da vista para o sul, leste, norte e oeste e depois o Victor tirou uma foto de mim com a confluência ao fundo.

Apesar das feridas nos pés valeu a pena ter visitado esta confluência. O local é belíssimo, sem nenhum sinal de poluição, a água do mar é transparente e a areia é de um branco intenso. A ilha é controlada pela marinha e é necessário obter uma autorização para poder visitá-la.

02-Mar-2001 -- During a recent trip to the city of Cabo Frio I decided to visit this confluence. The exact spot is on Cabo Frio Island (also known as Farol Island), which is close to the city of Arraial do Cabo.

Getting to the confluence was a true adventure because, besides the fact of being on an island, the confluence lies behind dunes of very fine sand and an immense amount of tiny thorns that made the task quite painful. But, being so close, I decided to face the challenge and I got to the spot with my nine-year-old son Victor (on his birthday!).

I got off the boat with water up to the neck and I almost wet my camera and GPS, Victor followed me with a life jacket. I used a Magellan MAP 410 GPS to find the confluence with an EPE (Estimated Position Error) of 3 meters. The exact spot was just 350 meters away but even so we had to climb two sand dunes and the closer we got, the more thorns there were on the ground (and we were barefoot, obviously). I had to leave Victor behind in the last few meters because it became impossible to walk without stepping on half a dozen thorns on every step I took, but I finally got there. I took pictures of the view to the south, east, north and west and afterwards Victor took a picture of me with the confluence in the background.

In spite of the wounds on my feet visiting this confluence was really worthwhile. The place is amazingly beautiful and without any trace of pollution, the seawater is transparent and the sand is extremely white. The navy controls the island and it is necessary to obtain an authorization to visit it.

Coordinator's Note: As the later visits, as well as a look on Google Earth confirm, the Confluence is definitely not located in the area of the sand dunes. Instead it is a couple of hundred meters deep in the dense forest and at a significant altitude above sea level. Most probably the visitor used another map datum than WGS84 on his GPS receiver, thus this visit has to become classified as "incomplete".
