#1: The ever present Nopal

(visited by Luis Felipe Trigo Boix and Bernardo Mendoza Santoyo)

13-May-2001 -- On May 13th, 2001 I visited 21ºN 102ºW - my second degree confluence.

This degree confluence is very close to the city of Leon, Guanajuato which is about 4 hours by car away from Mexico City, where I live. This is a very important shoe-manufacturing center within Mexico.

Fortunately I have a couple of brothers-in-law that live there and one, Fernando, had asked my wife, Lydia, to take care of his children while he was away on a business trip. She did take care of them for the whole week and I reached her on Friday for the weekend.

My other brother-in-law, Bernardo, and I (picture #3) agreed on doing this degree confluence early on Sunday before I came back to Mexico City. He and I are avid cyclists and compete in triathlons every now and then. He rode his bike to San Diego de Alejandria (which is closer to the target than Purisima del Rincon) and I followed by car.

Once we were within 500 meters of our objective we parked and proceeded by foot. The terrain is very flat, dry and covered with bushes of little to medium height. We had to jump a couple of 'rock walls' that are built by local people as delimiters. Within 15 minutes of walking we had reached our goal.

Picture #5 shows our start point (pink pin) and the degree confluence point (green pin).
