#1: Looking south from the confluence

(visited by Michael Muehlberger, Georg Fahringer, Reinhard Schwentner and Johanna Mayr)

14-Jun-2001 -- Because we were so close at our last attempt last weekend we quickly decided to give it another try.

Once again we started at 07:00 and reached our starting point at 10:30. This time we were a party of six. Our Chile-Team from 1998 (Georg, Reini and myself), Georg's girlfriend Barbara, their dog Rocky and my girlfriend Johanna. At the start we decided that Barbara and Johanna would stay close to the starting point and observe our attempt, so they could take action if anything goes wrong.

At the beginning the weather was even worse than the last time. It was much colder and the rain from last time had changed into a light snowfall. But there was some blue sky leaking through the clouds and we gave it a try. In the last attempt we tried it through the "backdoor" and approached the confluence horizontal from the left and failed. This time we tried it direct from the little plateau under the confluence area. We had to climb some steep snowfields and cross some rock formations and gained height quickly. Soon we reached the confluence without any problems. It is located at the left side of a big snowfield.

Now the sun was shining and we took the pictures to document our success. It was excatly 12:00. From the confluence we saw the summit of the "Sandfeld Kopf" an headed towards it.

On our way to the summit we noticed that Johanna was following us in 500 Meter distance. It looked like she was also heavily infected by the confluence-virus and could not stand the thought that she would not reach the confluence today. So I waited for her while Georg an Reini walked on to the summit. Every step she got closer the wind started to blow a little stronger and the clouds got a little thicker. So as we met at the summit at 13:08 we took only a very short break before we started our way down because the weather got realy nasty.

The descent was very easy compared with the ascent. All you have to do is to pay attention to your speed and the obstacles in your way when you slide down the snowfields.

As we reached the confluence we took a picture of Johanna and continued our way down. Fortunately Barbara was still waiting by the car (she had the keys) and we headed for home.
