#1: The fallen tree at the confluence.

(visited by Olli-Pekka Savela and Olli Suutela)

15-Jun-2001 -- Friday June 15, 2001: visit at 19:00 hours

The evening was drawing near when we approached the easternmost confluence site of our trip, which is also the easternmost in Finland.

The mood in the car was excited and joyful, pulling 6 confluences in a row had been fun - only one more, and we were set to spend a laid-back weekend in Joensuu!

Already halfway to the confluence we decided to turn back and get a fuel refill from the nearest town. We had only about quarter of a tank left and the area we were heading into was not exactly densely populated and distances between gas stations were considerably long.

Even with camping equipment, we were not looking forward to running out of gas in a desolate area.

Examining from the map, the confluence was surrounded by swamps, so we were expecting this to be the first challenge for a casual hikers like us. How wrong can one be! Even in eastern Finland, close to the border, there are roads that confluence visitors can follow.

We got so close again that it was almost an embarassment. A short 100m walk from small dirt road to the woods, and there it was, waiting for us.

A fallen tree marked the spot quite accurately. Olli spotted a partridge family nearby, but we failed to get a good picture of the birds.
