#1: The confluence point

(visited by Torrey Hoffman)

04-Jul-2001 -- From July 4th to 8th I took a short vacation and managed to visit three confluences. I started Wednesday July 4th, (a holiday in the United States), left my home in Seattle around 10 AM and headed west on Highway 2.

The first confluence at 48N 120W was quite easy to get to. I had a quick lunch in Leavenworth and then got onto Highway 97 heading north. Near Chelan, the highway crosses the Columbia River. Immediately after the crossing I left the main highway and drove up the hill to "Alternate 97" and then onto Apple Acres Road. A few miles further along I turned left onto Antoine Creek Road, which wound up into the hills towards the confluence point. When I was just a couple of miles from my destination, the road crossed into Okanogan National Forest, with a cattleguard and a sign marking the boundary.

Immediately after the boundary I turned right and followed the road. (This is marked as the "Jeep Trail" on the maps at topozone.com) The trail wound around and almost completely circled the confluence while steadily getting closer. I eventually parked my Jeep on a ridge top only three hundred feet from the destination. It was an easy walk from there to the confluence, which was on the edge of the ridge with an excellent view. After taking pictures I headed back down to the highway, and then north to 49N119W.
