#1: Looking North

(visited by Gordon Spence)

01-Feb-2002 -- After leaving Austin and visiting 30N 97W this afternoon I moved on to the fourth confluence point in two days - this time one that will be a first visit. The previous attempt got no further than the county road....

So, 77S to Halletsville, then Alt 77S to Cuero, swinging onto 72W to Kennedy then right onto 181N towards San Antonio.

I took a likely county road, which arced round back to 181N getting no nearer than two miles from the point. Onwards we go and take Farm Road 587 towards Pawelekville, striking out east. I stopped at 29N by a track which was a mile west of the point. This track was angling south...so onto the next turn off - CR229; this was more promising, the next left turn - CR237 put me on the same road the previous attempt must have reached. It was the entrance road to the La Jada Ranch (Pic 2), sounds impressive? It is a wooden single storey hut!

I parked at the side of the field, which was dry! - see my other visits, including the one to a peat bog with thigh deep icy water.... There were no notices to say "Go Away", and while I was only 100 yards into the field a red pickup stopped, had a look over at me, and then just drove on. Taking this as a tacit approval I carried on - straight into a field with a herd of beef on the hoof. With one rather large bull - lucky for me they wandered off as I approached.

By this time it was almost dark and I had to use the back-light to get the required GPS shots, presented here in a composite image (Pic 6). By now it was too dark to make much of anything out. No other shots were possible so I left and stopped in Floresville for the night - a nice cheap motel - $35 including tax!

Having done 290 miles I had to fill up before heading off back to the point for the location shots. Gas sure is cheap in Texas (Pic 7), back home I pay this much for a litre...

Tracking back out for the looking north shot in daylight (Pic 1) you can see a large radio mast, owned by American Tower (Pic 3). Don't forget this is oil country (Pic 4) & (Pic 5).

Four down in my American tour, 692 miles in total so far and on towards - an unvisited point - 29N 99W
