24-Mar-2002 -- My name is Carlos, I am 9 years old and this past week end my family and I went to the confluence point 39ºN 5ºW. Until very recently I had no idea of the meaning of a confluence, but I have had the time to learn, even though what I like is soccer.

It all started over during Epiphany (2002). Since I had been a good boy, the Magi brought me a Harry Potter book, a puzzle, and a few other things. My sister Marta, who is six years old, also received lots of presents. And my father, whose name is Jesus, only received one item, which means that during the last year (2001) he did not behave so well.

I did not know what it was what he got, it looked like a cellular phone, but you could not make phone calls, it was small, kind of like a Tamagotchi, but my father said that it was a GPS. I did not believe him, to me it was a Tamagotchi: It is small, you always carry it on your hand, you have to take good care of it and you have to push the buttons every so often. It also has to go to the bathroom (my father takes it there some times) and you have to feed it, it eats lots of batteries. Since that day he never separates from it. Takes it everywhere he goes and the rest of the family just follows them.

This past weekend (March 23-24, 2002) the whole family went out: the Tamagotchi, my father, mi mother whose name is Sabina, my sister and also my grandma Beni. We wanted to visit our cousins Antonio & Isabel that live in Campanario (Badajoz), and my aunt Magdalena from Castuera; my parents say that they are very nice people and Antonio tells many good jokes. Additionally they say that they have the very best ham in the family.

Since in Madrid (our city) we have a Mayor that only builds tunes for cars and underground parking lots, but does nothing for kids that like to go out and ride bicycle, play soccer and top, we have to get out of Madrid to ride bicycle and also go to the countryside and the mountains for walks. I think this is how my father became interested in his Tamagotchi. When I grow up, if I am Mayor, I will make bike lanes and places to play soccer without the neighbors complaining and without kids being run over by cars.

As I was saying, we went for a walk at the countryside. On other occasions we go visit a town, mountain or cave. However, this time we went to see some lines in the ground. Well, that is what my father said, he even showed me a map with the lines in it, it turns out they are called parallels and meridians. The point of confluence is where a parallel crosses a meridian that have no decimals.

We left home early on Saturday and stopped for lunch at Belvis de la Jara in the province of Toledo. From there we could see the Gredos mountain range with lots of snow on top. The peak Almanzor, at 2592 meters of elevation could be seen very well.

After Puerto Rey we entered into Extremadura, I think this region is called the Extremeña Siberia and is very pretty and very green, with several swamps. When we were getting close to the place with the lines in the ground, we saw that all the area was surrounded with wire fences to keep the animals in. With all this wire fences there is no place to park the car. My father made about 1 kilometer over the Siruela river. Looked at the map, looked at the Tamagotchi, look at the wire fence and after some thought, looked at my grandmother.

And my father said: “we are at more than 2 kilometers in straight line, and with the wire fence and the animals it is better for us to go following the river but it is a long walk. We put on our boots and took the road until the bridge over the Siruela river; at that point we descended to the side of the river and continued our journey. The river is very pretty, all the fields are very green due to the start of spring, and there are flowers everywhere.

After walking for a long time and taking some pictures, when we still had one kilometer we found a group of fishermen and a group of children by the river. They where surprised to see us in the area jumping one of the fences, my mother approached them and asked something. My mother always asks the questions, because my father occupies himself with the Tamagotchi.

They where fishing. Eduardo, who works in the fields, Deme who transports cereal in his truck, and Manolo who runs the bar at the ‘Centro de Pensionistas”. They all live in Siruela, the closest town to the famous point. They are all very friendly and kind, they asked where we came from and why we were following the river and jumping fences since there is a direct road from the town to the point in which they where fishing.

They did not understand that it is interesting to search for an unknown site of which you do not what is there until you reach it. I do not understand either. Since it was already late they offered to take us to town in their car and then they took Jesus and I to the place where we had parked. Jose also came along, the son of Deme.

We spend the night at the Hotel Amigos, in Siruela. We had dinner and went to sleep, we where exhausted.

The next day we got up very early and for breakfast we were the only ones at the hotel cafeteria. The owner of the hotel recommended that we visited the town hermitage; it is very pretty and very cold inside. Siruela is very pretty and clean. They told me that it exists since before the Romans came to Spain and in a mountain is a castle from the Templars, I believe from the XII century; in those days not even my grandmother Beni had been born. In the main plaza there is the ‘La Antigua’ church and the monastery of the Clarisa sisters, whom make cakes. Well, it is better that you go see it for yourself; I am not very good at explaining.

We left on the car and made wrong turns twice in less than 5 minutes. On our way we saw a heard of sheep that would not let us through, we stopped and my parents where talking with the owner of the sheep. He told us that he lived in Madrid for two years but that he lives much better in Siruela. I am sure since it has a river and a soccer field that is really open for kids to play in it. Besides, you can ride your bike from the door of your house, and not like the place where I live where they only do things for cars and nothing for humans.

All the way is flanked by stonewalls to prevent animals from getting out. Marta climes them because see enjoys climbing. Some times we go climbing with Maria and with Miguel to real mountains. Antonio and my father fasten us with two ropes, they say this is the way to do it.

We park the car in an open area and start walking. The Tamagotchi said that we where about 2 kilometers from the site and we walked trough a road flanked by walls and fences where we could see flowers and sheep. At the end, the road started to go down and little by little we could see that we where approaching the river. Once we jumped over a fence and my father said that we where at 200 meters, but on the other side of the river. In that area there are no bridges so we took our boots off to cross. Marta is fearless, was the first in she slipped and splash, on her back into the water and with no spare clothing. She was frightened initially but then we all laughed. My grandmother did not want to cross the river because the bottom was slippery, but finally she got courage and also crossed.

We put our boot back on and continued to laugh for a while, while Marta looked for insects in the shore of the river. In a short time we arrive to the point in which the GPS is full of zeroes, which seems to be what make my father happy.

Then he assured that this was the right place, a little bit to the north, a little bit to the west, a little in the opposite direction. And finally he said: here. What a disappointment, there where no lines on the ground, nothing, only grass and some bushes. The sheep that where in the area went away when they saw us, so, we where all alone. With small stones we marked N39 W05 which is what the Tamagotchi said, we ate some fruit, took some pictures, had a good time and, go, back for another crossing of the river. This time we used a different spot that my grandmother though had less water. It was lots of fun and since it was very sunny it felt like getting wet.

We returned to the car and to Siruela. We did not see our friends, who most surely where eating or fishing. We went to the ‘Bar Centro’ restaurant on the ‘España’ square and ate typical dishes from Extremadura. The owner of the restaurant told us that he had also lived many years in Madrid, but one day decided to come back and that his children where very happy. One of them had gone fishing the day before and caught 36 kilos and between he and his friends 70 kilos. In the square some kids about Marta’s age approached her just in front of the ‘La Antigua’ church, which is really pretty and has stork nests on the belfry. There are other stork nests in the ‘Casa del Perulero’ and the clock tower and sometimes they make noises with their beak.

On the return trip I fell asleep and it is because this confluence stuff is much more tiring than a good soccer game.

Boys and girls, ask for you parents a tie, a cigarette lighter, a book, because if they get a GPS you will not be able to play soccer on Sundays unless after walking and walking you find a nice town with parallels and meridians and rivers and a good sports field. I like Siruela

Me gusta Siruela.
