#1: General view of area

(visited by Hendrik van Eeden and Jana van Eeden)

04-Jul-2002 -- After our successful visit to 25S 33E (the first Confluence to be visited in Mozambique), we continued driving towards our vacation destinations at Závora and Tofo. I intended trying to visit 24S 35E later in the trip. However, after passing through Xai-Xai, I noticed that we seemed to be heading straight for the Confluence at 25S 34E. Without any good maps of Mozambique I had thought that this Confluence was over the Indian Ocean, but now we were going to pass within 3 km of it. Although the coast was quite near, it seemed probable that the Confluence was actually on land.

A sandy track lead off from the EN1 main road conveniently in the right direction at our closest approach. Once again we ignored the land mine warnings and turned off the main road. We followed the track for about 2 km, and just as it started veering away with the beach dunes already in sight, a very faint track turned off. This took us through a vlei (marsh) and ended at an old foundation. We could only get to about 1 km from the Confluence by vehicle, so once again my daughter Jana and I got out and started hiking cross country, leaving the wife and two other kids at the bakkie.

The whole area was completely deserted with water birds on the vlei. Jana and I hiked over several little sandy hills through beautiful and tranquil countryside with the only sign of human habitation being a small mealie (corn) field. We easily reached the Confluence less than one hour after turning off the main road – the second one of the day and the second one in Mozambique.
