#1: Confluence point

(visited by Benoit Tremblay and Stéphanie Jacques)

English

23-Jun-2002 -- This confluence is located in a middle of a forest where logging is quite active. We left Québec City and drove about 650 km north-east in order to find confluent 49°N 65°W.

June 22nd 7:00 Departure from Québec city.

June 22nd 15:30 We cross Murdochville, the closest village to the confluent. We have about 25 km to drive on a paved road before turning left on a logging road.

June 22nd 15:45 We start driving on the gravel road which runs along York River. We expect to drive for about 20 km and then walk 10 km on old logging roads to reach the confluent. According to our map, this gravel road is supposed to be a major branch. However, it is rather a trail than a road and we wonder if our small car will make it... In fact, after driving 10 km, a bridge is collapsed and there is a small gulley to cross. We leave the car and start walking with our camping gear. After walking 3 km and crossing a beaver dam , we hit a real logging highway. This logging highway appears on our map, but according to the map, it is not supposed to be as major branch as it is. Also, the road is not supposed to connect to highway 189 (a paved road). We decide to return where we parked the car and camp beside York River. Our plan is to drive on the major gravel road the next day.

June 23rd 8:30 We start driving to reach paved road 189. On the highway, we soon locate the main logging road we saw the day before. The confluent is about 22 km ahead. After crossing numerous clear cuts, the road leads us as near as 400 m to the confluent. We are lucky; we didn’t expect to have such a short walk!

June 23rd 10:30 We reach confluent 49°N 65°W. The point is on the edge of a small clear cut.

June 23rd 13:00 We leave the forest and bugs. We are having a cold beer on the beach in Percé, a small touristic place located about 150 km from the confluent.
