16-Jul-2002 -- This confluence was reached during a 1402 km cycle trip in north Iceland.

Started in the afternoon from Atlavik camping site in Fljotsdalur south of Egilsstadir. Rode about 24 km to the Muli farm, 885 m from the confluence. I asked the farmer for permission to leave the bike at a shed while I went up the Muli hillside. It was easy to reach the confluence at 195 m elevation.

There was a large cairn about 300 m to the west. I few sheep were grazing nearby. The river Lagarfljot could be seen in the notheast. The ice cap of Vatnajökull and the 1833 m peak Snaefell were both to the south, but could not be seen from the confluence, due to Muli. The landscape type is lowland and hillside grazing fields and rocky hill slopes. One of Iceland's few forests (most of it is a plantation) is located at Atlavik.

I walked back to the farm and talked to the farmer and his wife and son, who were harvesting on the fields. I got permission to take some pictures while they were working. On the way back I passed an information screen telling about advanced plans to build a dam across Jökulsa a dal and lead the water to a power plant near Valthjofsstadur and further into Lagarfljot. The power generated is intended to be used for an aluminum smelter at Reydarfjördur. I also passed the gully with the 250 m waterfall Hengifoss, but didn't walk the 2.5 km to the waterfall.

The famous Icelandic author Gunnar Gunnarsson also lived in a architecturally interesting building at Skriduklaustur just north of Valthjofsstadur.
