#1: Westerly view from Confluence

(visited by Chris Matthews and Bev Matthews)

23-Aug-2002 -- The journey to this Confluence was simplified by the proximity of a sealed road. After driving from Jidda very early on a hot late summer morning, we passed through the town of Madraka. At the closest point on the road, there was a track towards the point for 100 metres or so. We parked the car, then took the GPS and our dog and scrambled up a dry creek bed to a low ridge in the black rocky terrain. The area is typical of the dark volcanic harrat of the Red Sea hinterland.

We had to descend on the northern side of the ridge and finally were able to get the 40.00.000 22.00.000 reading on the GPS. After taking some photos, we retraced our track to the car. The journey home was made more pleasant by visiting the Afghan tandoor bakery in Madraka and buying a delicious hot flat bread.
