16-Dec-2001 -- Having been in the area on holiday, my wife Ursula and I set out (with not too much planning) from the Winterton area (holidaying at our time share at Champagne Sports Resort) and headed for Mooirivier and Greytown area on our BMW R1150GS Adventure... for those of you not in the know... this is a motorcycle! Having had a snack and cool drink at Greytown, and loaded with plenty of enthusiasm, we set off to the yet unclaimed 29S 31E not knowing what to expect.
When we arrived in the Kranskop area, without saying too much to my good lady, I started suspecting why this Confluence had not yet been claimed! Mountains a plenty... and big ones!! We dropped down into the Tugela River valley very quickly having decided that it was going to be easier to approach this Confluence from the North rather than the South. The once tarred road down this spectacular pass is in very poor condition, but not impossible. The dirt road at the bottom is in good condition with some poor patches. This road unfortunately goes too far south and the small tracks are very tricky with a large dual sport bike.
Because it was getting late (I told you, we didn't do enough planning), we unfortunately had to give up. We were not prepared for a significant hike of about 5 km into the mountains, but have vowed to return better prepared! So you folks out there, better get there quick if you want to be first!
