13-Aug-2002 -- Having done 65N 16W easily yesterday, we expected to reach this confluence without too much difficulty. The confluence is in the Laufskalafjallgardhur mountains in North East Iceland. We went up the 864 and tried to find a track which goes East to the confluence, but this seemed to end in a couple of farms, so we backtracked, took the 864 further North to join the 867, and took a track from the 867 which goes South to the confluence.
It was raining (as usual), the track was very muddy, getting worse, and seemed to be designed for vehicles with bigger tyres. We had a big 4x4, but by Icelandic standards it was tiny. We finally reached a pipe across the road a few kilometres from the confluence and gave up. We turned round and only just made it out through the mud, so I believe we made the right decision.
If you want to get this confluence, leave enough for a long walk, take a big vehicle, or (least likely of all) go at a time when it hasn't rained for a week.
