We had been to Recife for vacation and decided to rent a car to go a bit more inland in order to visit some confluences.

This confluence was the first. It was close to Camarajibe (a city just a few kilometers away from the metropolian area of Recife). We were driving with our GPS in the car trying to find a parking place as close as possible. The closest we managed was about 800 meters. This was relatively close, but the problem was another : We were in a slum like area and worried to let the car alone because of the high crime rates in slums. But since there seemed to be tracks into the fields we decided to risk it since an 800 meter walk shouldn´t take so much time.

When we walked through the fields we got closer and closer to a garbage area were we saw people collecting cans and other garbage to get a little money for that. This hill is shown on picture #7. We even saw some tents that were put on the garbage, probably because some people stayed a lot there. We were worried again since the confluence seemed to be right on this garbage hill and it wouldnt be such a nice idea to appear there with a GPS and a camera, because we would risk to be robbed. Those people were extremely poor. Next to the garbage there was a swamp, just 300 meters from the confluence. Another way we thought was to find a way crossing this swamp, but when we started to sink into the mud we gave up this idea as well.

Then we met a woman that was asking us what we were doing. She told us the swamp water would be contaminated because of the garbage and offered us to clean our feet in her yard. There were animals in the water that could enter the feet and cause a disease.

This was a lot of luck since the confluence seemed to be directly in her yard and we wouldn´t have managed to enter there alone because of a fence and because of more or less 12 dogs that were protecting the area.

After we had washed our feet we told her that we were interested in seeing not only big cities but also the countryside of Brazil and asked her to show us her yard. Her daugher decided to show us their yard.

As we walked with her daughter through the area we saw banana plantations mixed with other types of farmland. During this walk we finally managed to reach the confluence ! It was 5 meters right from the main track leading through the field.

We took a few pictures directly at the confluence (picture #1 to picture #4), two pictures of us and the daughter of the woman that had showed us the yard (picture #5 and #6). During our visit the woman also told us that there had been other tourists in the area that had brought a camera and something like a GPS ( probably people that tried to visit the confluence before us). But they had been robbed by the bus driver and one of them was even killed. We got really worried and went back to the car as fast as we could.

Luckily nothing had happened to our car ( and nothing happened with us as well)! We were really relieved and decided to visit the next confluence : 8S36W. What we didnt know : This one should be much harder to reach than this one.

As pessoas eram extremamente pobres.
