¡Bingo! ¿Quiénes éramos? Nico Bello, Santiago Soto Acebal, Pierre Lous, Carlos Burstin y quien esto escribe, Federico B. Kirbus.

18-Oct-2002 -- The quest for 30ºS 67ºW

No, by Jove no joke. But several people we had asked told us about all kind of beasts near the spot we had pinpointed for making a confluence in that terrible desert called Los Llanos (The Flats), in NW Argentina La Rioja province.

No pumas would be near, but, yeah!, snakes a go-go: the poisonous yarará, the fast rattle, the mortal coral. Besides, all kinds of insects.

Even though we had no adequate shoes nor strong pants or shirts, we tried to get to the ominous virtual place amidst the thicket. The bush and the hard grass scratched and scraped our skin. And we had to walk quite a wile until finding that virtual yet invisible spot. Worst, when we finally arrived at 30º S and 67º W the bush was so thick that it was impossible to take pictures for documenting the geographic situation of the site.

Finally, that day the GPS satellites went crazy. Repeatedly we had to go forth and back with the Garmin until there finally appeared al zeros behind the numbers.

In the end, we made it. ¿Who are we? Well: Nico Bello, Santiago Soto Acebal, Pièrre Lous, Carlos Burstin and yours very truly, Federico B. Kirbus.
