(visited by Riel Smit and David Hall)

20-Apr-2003 -- Having previously conquered 30S 18E and always looking for an excuse for a motorbike trip, we decided to visit a few Northern Cape Confluences.

We set out from Cape Town on the N7 towards Upington via Vanrhynsdorp, Calvinia, Brandvlei, and Keimoes, reaching Upington early Saturday evening. After a decent dinner in a local restaurant we spent the night in an Upington hotel ready for an early start on Sunday, 20 April.

Leaving shortly before sunrise we set course North from Upington for Askham towards 28S 21E. The road features a large sign about 20 km outside Upington warning of high speed vehicle testing (for authorised vehicles only): A function of ideal test conditions given a long straight tar road, high temperatures, and an altitude close to sea level.

The tar road takes one within 300 meters northeast of the Confluence, a point we reached shortly after sunrise. The ground is flat and sandy with low sparse vegetation, making the Confluence easy to reach after climbing over a low wire fence. The sun was still low on the horizon, so we could not take a true east photograph and had to settle for one slightly south of east. After taking the photographs we returned to Upington for breakfast, and onwards to our next planned stop at 29S 22E.
