#1: Ilha da Boa Vista with Pico Estância seen from the Confluence

(visited by Captain Peter and Valentyn Smirnov)

01-May-2003 -- After having visited 15N 23W we proceeded exactly on the 23W-meridian towards North, until we reached 16N 23W about four hours later.

The visibility did even deteriorate, and so the photos we could take turned not be out to be good ones, even on such a short distance of only 4 km.

Ilha da Boa Vista is of volcanic origin and transversed generally through the centre from N to S by a mountain range. Pico Estância, 390 m (1,280 ft) is the highest peak of the island. Monte Santo António, 378 m (1,240 ft) rises isolated and prominent in the SW part of the island.

The SW-coast is sandy.

The principal industry of the island is the manufacture of salt.
