13-May-2003 -- Our vacation trip in the south of Morocco brought us very close to the confluence point near Foum Zguid in Morocco. According to the map, the point is only 2 km away from the road. However, when we were on the mentioned road, I noticed that the point was 5.7 km away from the road. Such a long journey in the hot desert of Morocco is not recommended at such a time of the day. Fortunately, we had a Landrover and could persuade our driver to give us a ride into the desert.

Our destination was situated in the middle of a very rough and stony desert landscape. When travelling to "our" point, we saw in the distance a tent of nomads on our route. First we thought that that tent is exactly on our point. This proved to be wrong, but we could not continue driving with the Landrover, since there were sand-dunes behind the tent.

When we stopped just in front of the tent, the owner already came out to meet us. He looked somewhat puzzled when we tried to explain to him that we were looking for an imaginary point on the map. Still 1.8 km separated us from the point, a distance we had to cover now on foot. After a long foot march, the temperature reached 35°C in the sun, we finally reached confluence point 30°00'00"N 7°00'00"W. It is in the middle of a very barren desert landscape (see photos east, north, west, south).

On the way back, we met the nomads again, who invited us for tea. It is hardly believable but even nomads use mobile phones on a regular basis in the middle of the desert!
