02-Aug-2003 -- VISITANDO A CONFLUÊNCIA 23ºS 47ºW - VALINHOS/SP

MISSAO CUMPRIDA !!!!

REACHING THE CONFLUENCE 23ºS – 47ºW (ENGLISH)

After checking the pictures from the first and second visits to this confluence, we could see that the confluence pictures taken are not the same. In order to check who really reached the confluence first, we decided to clear the matter, since it lies very close to our homes.

Target defined, I only have the work of calling call my friend LEO, PY2LEU, one of the most active amateur radios from Valinhos/SP and Ricardo, PY2RMI. In less than one week I gathered the team, along with my two litlle sons ARTHUR and THOMAS, and also TAM, a young man that wants to go with us with his camera in way to practise his photographic skills.

Valinhos lies about 80m km north from Sao Paulo city and 10 km from Campinas. It is a very pleasant and small town with around 70.000 inhabitants with a kind of country style of life, in spite of a very rich industrial basis, as well.

After checking the map and the pictures of the prior visits, we saw that it will be a easy and fast visit, since the confluence point is just around 1,5 kmm from LEO home’s at Jardim Maracanã neighborhood.

Our only difficult was to get a GPS receiver, because none from the group has one. Fortunately our friend NATAL, another amateur radio, callsign PY2NMK, in a very friendly action, borrowed his Garmin GPS to us and 20 minutes after I got it, I was parking the car with the group, just around 350 meters from the confluence point... but there were a problem... we didnt had time to read the GPS manual programing instructions, and we know only how to read the point and not how to program in order to make our search easier...

This confluence point is just around Valinhos and Vinhedo boarder, inside a bush area of a private small fertilizer plant.

We start the search walking in the middle of some seriguela and fig crops in direction to a Eucaliptus bush, that we suposed that was very close to the confluence point. It was a Saturday after lunch, very warm and dry.

After crossing the Eucaliptus bush, we walked in midlle of a very tall and dry native vegetation, and after that we went in a rental buffet place, speccially rented for parties and celebrations, where there was having probably a big birthday party, with barbecue and music alive. We got permisssion from a party participant and crossed to a fertilizer plant bush, reaching the backyard of the plant. OK... we were almost reaching the point, but as we didnt know how to operate the GPS, Ricardinho, our GPS pilot, started walking around to find the exactly confluence point.

Great happinnes everybody faced whem the GPS indicated full 23º.00.000 and 47º.00.000. Target fulfilled !!!!! ...We took some pictures and walked around in way to localize the exactly Confluence indication, installed by the prior visitors, last year. Finally we foundt it hanged in a eucalyptus tree 20 meters from the confluence point. Fortunately someone informed about the project moved it because the originally tree was down. Now it is in a safe point, in a tall eucalyptus tree. Anyone can find it easily.

After the job, we crossed the fertilezer plant and reached the street by the main gate. A big dog come to greet us, fortunately it is very tame and just want to play with the children. Twenty minutes after we reached the car and went for drinking some soft drinks to celebrate the goal of reach this confluence without any experience on that. We never managed a GPS before.

We realized that doing a confluence is also a adventure that brought good thing to us. Now, we are planning a second confluence visit in the region for the forthcoming month.

Thanks, everybody.
