#1: It's out there - Muckle Flugga just to the right

(visited by Christopher Anton)

31-May-2003 -- This trip to Shetland was planned to see the Annular eclipse. I had woken at 2am that morning to leave the hotel which was an amazing site with the entire population leaving as if doing a mass midnight flit. Drove to Haroldswick (the most northerly habitation in Britain) where the rave was already in full swing on the beach and walked to the cliff edge where there was a crowd of several hundred. It was a beautiful sunrise at 3.45am and a clear band near the horizon gave hope, but it was obvious with about 30 mins to go before the middle of the eclipse that this band wasn't going to be wide enough. Pic 2 shows the last glimpse of the eclipse, and Pic 3 was taken at exactly mid eclipse showing a beautiful clear sky a few km off shore.

After returning disappointed and freezing cold to the hotel for a snooze and breakfast later that day I walked to the extreme northernmost point of GB just opposite Muckle Flugga, and took Pic 1 which looks towards the confluence point. At that time I was the most northerly person in Britain: there were a few sheep closer to the cliff edge but i wasn't going any further.
