#1: The point and the porphyry gneiss hill

(visited by Claude Wacker and Dominique Wacker)

English version

English:

01-Dec-2003 -- Four days after we reached the point 24S 18E, climbed the highest dune of the world in Sossusvlei, admired the Atlantic Ocean in Swakopmund and crossed the Namib's lunar landscapes, we travelled North. 17 km before Kalkfeld we branched off towards the West at the board Jagdfarm Ondombo-West and took the D2338 up to the entrance of the domain Otjeriwanga N° 33 of K. Jakob (20'59'09"S 16'00'45"E). The fence being padlocked we continued on foot: there was still 2 km 150 m to walk.

We followed the trail because it was easier to walk there than to zigzag around the somewhat high and compact thorny bushes. The direction lead us to a stony hill, but fortunately we didn't have to climb it, the spot being just at the feet of these rocks. The hill is made of an intrusion of porphyry gneiss with very big feldspat crystals (about 2 cm). Around the spot we saw some gemsboks, kudus, warthogs and monkeys.

Continued at 20S 17E.

Coordinator's Note: A comparison with the pictures taken by the subsequent visitors of the Confluence, as well as a checking of the coordinates given for the farm gate, gives evidence suggest that the visitors possibly had set their GPS receiver to another geodetic system than WGS84, so that they located the spot about 100 m too close to the hill. It would be appreciated if further visitors could do some reconnaissance in this respect.
