#1: Confluence 16N 101E seen from West

(visited by Laurent Moinard)

31-Dec-2003 -- On December 31, 2003, after spending a few days in the Thung Salaeng Luang national park, I traveled back to Bangkok on highway 21. I was riding with a Thai friend who wants to remain nameless. Highway 21 passes a few kilometers east of Confluence Point 16N 101E.

At Nong Phai we left Highway 21 in a westerly direction. I did not write down the number of the road we were on, but it is a good paved road. I turned on the GPS receiver, which showed that we were getting closer and closer. We left that road by turning left on a smaller road, which took us about 140 meters south of the objective. It was about 12:30. The area is hilly, with fields and wooded areas. There are several farm houses near the point where we stopped the car.

My companion chose to wait in the car. I started walking north through a plowed field, then through a hedge of trees and a small ditch to another plowed field. The Confluence point is at the edge of a field, under a cluster of bamboo trees.

The picture of the general area is taken from the west, at the edge of a field. The confluence point is under the bamboo trees.

The picture looking west shows the corner of the field from which the "general area" picture is taken, near the tree stumps. There is a drainage ditch on the south side of the field, which was almost dry at the time and could be walked across easily.

The pictures in the other three directions show mostly trees because I was standing under the bamboo trees shown in the first picture.

This was an easy Confluence to visit. Later that day, highway 21 took us a few kilometers west of Confluence 15N 101E. It was very tempting to visit it, but it was getting late and we had to get back to Bangkok to meet someone else. So, we left it for next time we are in the area, or for someone else to grab first.
