English Narrative

01-Feb-2004 -- That day we didn’t plan to visit a confluence so our visit was spontaneous nevertheless successful.

We were fishing on ice near the summer camp “Nagornoe”. The weather was sunny with mild southern wind but for some reason there was not a single bite. We spent about five hours on ice having changed four different places but didn’t manage to catch any fish. The wind became stronger, we got cold and started thinking about some more active entertainment. GPS receiver showed that it was about 15 kilometers to the nearest confluence point and we decided to make our first visit.

Fifteen kilometers on the straight line turned into one hour trip by narrow forest paths. Luckily we had a detailed map of the area in our GPS device so we eventually found ourselves on a concrete road. In ten minutes we approached the confluence point.

Further traveling by car was impossible, snow was more than half a meter thick. Leaving our car by the roadside we dashed through the snow to the point. The countryside was rather billowy and soon we realized that our ice-fishing clothes designed to spend many hours on ice is not the best choice for running in deep snow. The sun was almost touching the horizon and we again sped up our pace. After crossing two ravines we found ourselves exactly at the confluence. Luckily it was located at the small clearing in the forest.

Completely tired, we set the camera to work. We made our first shot (a photo of the GPS device lying on the snow). Bang! The first shot was the last one. The camera was not working anymore, the frost killed the battery. We were not going to give up. We disliked the idea of having to repeat our trip just because of such a trifle. Swearing like sailors we pulled the battery out of the camera, put it closer to the heart under our clothes, held it there for several minutes, then started warming it by rubbing with our hands. The sun was almost set and it would be impossible to take pictures in a few minutes. At last we managed to reanimate the camera and quickly took necessary pictures. Hooray! The visit was successfully completed.

In the dusk we went back to the car making plans for a new visit.
