15-Feb-2004 -- The most obvious sites have been taken so it now remains to make some effort or be somewhere more unusual – preferably at the expense of an employer.

I came from Mongolia to visit Uzbekistan again for two weeks – courtesy of the European Union taxpayer to work on field crops as part of a (TACIS) technical assistance programme.

In December we made the first visit in Uzbekistan and this was the third. After a short explanation about GPS and the confluence project my driver Sergei and interpreter Nurlan were happy to join me on this short expedition – not much else exciting happening in Karshi on a Sunday.

Just 25 km from the regional centre of Karshi this confluence is close to the main road to Samarqand – not quite on the old Silk Road though. We drove to within 1 km of the confluence then found a convenient track which took us to a point just 70 metres from the confluence. The site is on a large un-irrigated wheat field which should produce a respectable 1.5 to 2 tonne crop in June. Photographic records taken and joint congratulations done it was back to the car and home – all done within 90 minutes. Easy peasy!!
