I got stuck in the sand" meldete.

02-Feb-2004 -- It was the time for changing the lead of the group again after Frank had succeeded in showing us Confluence 19N 48E. Heiko was the driver to guide us back to Andy's Nissan and further on to Confluence 18N 47E.

This trip back proved itself as very difficult. It was impossible to take the same track back through the dunes. Before, we had passed through many slip faces and steep long slopes, which we couldn't manage with our cars in the opposite direction. Now it was Heiko's responsibility to find a safe return through this heavy dune formation. In some places of the unstructured dune line the sand was very soft and all over picked by deep hollows. It didn't take long until the radio message from Heiko came: "I got stuck in the sand."

As usual, the second driver who followed tried to help. But I had also to radio the message, "I got stuck, too". No problem, we thought, there was still Frank left with his winch. Then the unthinkable happened, the third one also got stuck when he reached the area to help us out. The only way to get our four-wheel drives moving, was to push, to shovel, to push, shovel, and to push... and luckily we managed this dune line after one hour of hard work and a bath in sweat.

In front of us, down in the valley another abandoned Aramco well no. 1-S 936 appeared. After a short stop, we continued our ride through the sand and reached Andy's Nissan untouched in the dunes at 2.30 pm. The best way was to go easy on the clutch of Andy's Nissan. We stayed in the dune valley and kept on heading toward Confluence 18N 47E.

We hit the point shortly before sunset, and built up our last camp on this trip in the Rub` al-Khāliy, in the dunes very near to the Confluence. We felt the light breeze on top of the dune, and the sand around our legs. The shadows of the clouds, produced by the strong moonlight, danced on the sand in front of us. A spectacle to watch and dream about...
