10-May-2004 -- A marvelous way to vary city dwellers' usual departures to nature - to visit a certain point - the crossing of a suitable meridian and parallel - and to tell the world about it!

The confluence point 61°N 30°E is located, according to this site, on lake Vuoksa (map).

This part of the big lake system, originating in Finland and now flowing into lake Ladoga, is a popular vacation spot, and on it pass many water tourist routes. Having been in these places earlier, and knowing the local conditions, it was easy enough to visit this point.

On the northeast shore of lake Vuoksa and the northwest shore of lake Ladoga there is a regional center - the city of Priozersk. On the website of the city there is a lot of interesting information on the rivers and lakes of the region, and the histories of these places.

The presence of a facility for hiring boats solves the problem - how, from Priozersk, to get to 61°N 30°E via the shortest route - on water.

I, with my traveling companion Irina, assumed we could do the forthcoming 12-15 kilometer route, to the point and back, in a motor boat.

We rented a small old boat, hung the motor we brought from Petersburg on the transom, and went on our way.

After half an hour of motion we chose one of the many stopping places, located on the islands and lakeshore, and came to a stop - to fortify ourselves and learn to use the GPS receiver. I, with the Garmin GPS which happened to be at our disposal, most of all liked the opportunity to set the coordinates of the required point, and to receive on the display the direction and distance to it. Using this function we continued on our way in the required direction.

The breeze, and the absence of an anchor, has not allowed us to achieve on the water an absolutely precise positioning on the confluence point.

The views in the cardinal directions (N, S, E, W) were not remarkable for particular variety.

The best nearby landmark of this point was approximately 200m east - a small stele established on one of the granite outcroppings and well visible from the water.
