#1: The Confluence

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

20-May-2004 -- We visited this confluence on our way from Wiesbaden (Germany) to Paris. The highway A4 comes very close to the CP, its just some 12 km from the exit Sainte Menehould. Following some small country roads through the pretty Champagne-Ardenne, we were quite surprised to find the confluence point in a village. We parked our car just 60 m from the CP and were actually done already. But the final approach to get exact integer-valued latitude and longitude took us a while. We first went to the nearby church surrounded by a cemetery (picture #6). Then, we hiked around the CP and found out, that there is no legal access to the point. The people from the village which is named Éclaires seemed to be suspicious about our acting – running back and fourth in their village with a weird instrument. I had to explain what we were doing, but my French is really not sufficient for such complicated explanations. Well, they let us do our job anyway. In order to reach the exact point we had to enter private property. Luckily the friendly owner of the property was there and let us inside the fence (picture #4). The CP is about 30 m behind the fence in a meadow. It’s a pretty spot surrounded by different land use: houses, gardens, meadows, a lake and a grave yard. Previous visits show that particularly Germans are interested in visiting this CP.
