Deutsch

26-Jul-2004 -- After the visit to Hammerfest, on my drive back over Lakself, Karasjok and Inari, I saw in Ivalo the sign: Murmansk: 296 km. Not even that far to the northwestern centre of Russia. There is a road # 969, originating in Ivalo, that leads over 43 km to Nellim and from there another 8 km to the finnish-russian border. I had my passport with me. The idea was that maybe I would be allowed to visit the little town of Rajakoski, if I was able to get a visa for one day. It would have been 33 km away from the border. The confluencial point is located about 3 km ahead of the town, just next to the street. 5 km after Nellim you can see the first stop and advice – signs. This is where the borderzone starts. The closest position to this point is N 68° 53.789 / E 028° 25.450.

The next 3 km to the border are definately borderzone area. It is marked yellow on the trees to the left and right. You are not allowed to be here without suffiecent cause. This means you have to file a request with the border-security-officer at first. You need a good reason for this request to be granted. The officer then forwards it to the russian authorities. They might grant an authorization after talking to somebody in the official department. The authorization would be in russian. This authorization then would go the finnish border-securities, where I would more than likely have to pay a pretty good fee. All of this would probably take several days, maybe even weeks. I don´t have this time and this is why this time it´ll only be an attempt to reach this point. Maybe this possibility will come again. Maybe coming from the north, from road # 885 from Nyrud in Norway. Or maybe the russian authorities will decide one day to let tourists visit the towns Jäniskoski and Rajakoski with a one-day visa.
