English Narrative

English Narrative

22-Aug-2004 -- We left towards the town of BATTAMBAN at 4:50 a.m. on August 22. PATTAMBAN is the 2nd biggest city of Cambodia and is 291km by national highway No. 5 from the capital Phnom Penh. Paving work is finished, and we were able to pass through the town of KOMPON CHUNAN (Monument in Kampong Chang), and were able to arrive at the town of BATTAMBAN (Monument in Battambang) in about 4 hours.

After taking early lunch in BATTAMBAN, we went on national highway No. 57 (the old No. 10) aiming for 13N 103E. Although this road was the road which goes to the town of PAIRIN from BATTAMBAN, the road is uneven due to heavy-duty trucks which carry a load tied to the top. Further more the rain made big puddles and twice we encountered situations on the(Road to Pailin in which the car became mired in the mud and couldn’t move.

After about 20km from BATTAMBAN the road changes to a narrow track (Road To 13N103E). About 6.5km down the narrow road the road comes close to 13N 103E. Along this road we saw a sign (Caution and mines!) which appeals to children for them to be cautious of a mines or unexploded shells. Luckily 13N 103E was in a rice field.

It was 346 km from Phnom Penh and it took us about 7 hrs. including the time we spent stuck in traffic on the road to Pailin
