English narrative

19-Sep-2004 -- Inspired by our successful visit to the point 57N086E, we hastened to the following point – 57N084E.

This sunny Sunday had already gone quite a bit past midday, from Asino to the house was about 350 kilometers, but we all decided to make a 200 kilometer detour to visit the sought-after point. The whole point was that points close to home did not remain any more – Siberian Hunters have worked well this season. Therefore now more and more, more time will be spent driving to the area of the search, than on the search, so – this time we have already gotten this far – it is necessary to try to have time to do more. However not always, as we know, do our desires coincide with our opportunities…

In the village Kargala there is a fork where the road heading to the northern part of the Tomsk area originates – to Kolpashevo and Kargasok. At first it is concrete, however after about 20 kilometers asphalt appears. And after about another 25 kilometers it is time for us to turn. The time was 19:00, there remained six kilometers to a point, and we have turned into a forest…

We zigzagged through the damp forest, trying to find a way through, while all turned out well – the trees (basically alder and pine) did not grow too densely, leaving opportunities for travel. One kilometer, two, three… When we passed 5 km the phone began to ring. In the same second was heard an impact, a cracking sound, the vehicle jumps up and stops dead in its tracks. With a premonition that something is wrong, I get out of the vehicle – indeed! A healthy tree lies across the road, completely hidden by the dense grass, and on this tree, having hopped over it with the front tires, our machine sits. The front wheels are helplessly suspended in the air, and the tree trunk has firmly jammed between the wheel arch and the threshold. Quickly I consider the options – an axe and saw are not present (though we always crought them, and they were never useful, but this time… as if on purpose!), there were two jacks, but different and untested, a winch…, but there are some weak saplings, about a liter of potable water, there are matches, there is a little food…, full fuel tanks, there are sleeping bags, the motor works, to the nearest habitation is about ten kilometers in a straight line. However, it grew dark, and it was already necessary to begin to do something. My good fellows have not let me down – they have gone ahead and made a fire – and they wait. They while away the time, driving away the midges.

At once it became clear, that the jacks were too small – they barely reached, and in fact under the legs the ground was wet, so they still settled in under the weight of the machine. It has almost gotten dark. I climb with a lantern under the machine, yes… sits strongly, with the whole frame, moreover this grass – towards autumn, the stalks are like branches of a bush – they can't be pulled out by hand, it pokes into your face, gets wound up in the jack. I unwind the winch, I get it under a log sideways from the vehicle, I try to pull – it is useless. I go to the nearest alder. At a height of three meters it has a just suitable bough, if only it will hold up! After the tenth attempt, at last, I throw the hook, with excitement I start to reel it in. The bough held up. The roots did not. The tree falls directly on the hood – it's good that it was only branches. Trying harder, I dump it on the ground, no larger trees remain nearby. What options do we have left? It is now completely night. I send my family into the vehicle, and turn on the heater. I put on a couple of T-shirts -- it is not cold! Again I get under the vehicle, this time in front. One jack is hydraulic. Adjusting the height with the help of a screwdriver and a wrench, I get it under a spring. Cautiously I raise it – yes! The driver's side has risen about five millimeters. I run to the cab of the vehicle, and try to move it – it is useless, the right side still sits firmly. The second jack does not suffice even in front – it is obviously from a car and is very unstable… I go into the woods, I find a healthy log and, having broken off the branches, haul the whole thing to the vehicle – there is nothing with which to saw off a piece. I push it under the vehicle, slide myself alongside it, a flashlight between my teeth, I start to attach the jack. The tree is slippery, the jack is shaky, and pops out all the time. I try again and again. I found a metal ledge on the spring fastener, I try to rest the jack against it. It moved a little. I lay on my back between the two jacks, turning somewhat cautiously – I understand – I will break it, and there will be no more chances, and it will jump out – and the vehicle will unceremoniously press me down. And so, the second side too has risen – oh, now be sturdy! Carefully I creep out, but I do not hurry into the vehicle – again I get the winch around a log. This time, not sideways, but precisely in the middle between the wheels - also, I run the cable not from the top down, but from below upwards. I sit in the machine and I ask god that it works out – there will not be more options. I start to pull the winch and, simultaneously I try to back up. The engine growls, the winch squeals, it smells hot, and, at last, when the vibrations reach their peak, everything starts moving and the vehicle, as if submitting to a mightier force, carries all its weight over the log. We are rescued!

I look at the time – midnight. I have time to photograph the situation and it is time to be on our way. It is still necessary to leave the forest, and ahead, up to the house, are 400 km more. We are absolutely happy, and we will get there!

We wish success to all!
