18-Nov-2004 -- Bonjour mes amis, comment ça va? Babsi, Armin and myself were at Maroua in northern Cameroon, on a ten-day motorbike trip from Abuja in Nigeria. It was our seventh day on tour and so far we had spent a fantastic time in this beautiful part of the world. It was approaching time to start going back to Abuja but not before we would explore one or two Confluences.

We decided that Armin on his BMW would try to visit confluence 10N 14E, while Babsi and myself on the Honda XR’s would try confluence 11N 14E, and then meet again for the night at Roumsiki.

Babsi and myself were the first to leave Maroua at around 9:00 a.m., travelling on a tarred road to Mora. From Mora onwards there were only natural roads, which were in pretty bad conditions. At Mora we took the road leading to Mokolo, and after travelling on this road for around 15 km we stopped, mounted the GPS and carried on. We were not farther than 10 km from the Confluence.

The first attempt to leave the road and try proceeding off-road failed after a kilometre and we went back to the road again. It was not long when we discovered that we were not only 5 km away from the Confluence, but found another path leading into the direction of the Confluence. This path passing through grassland with occasional maize, millet and cotton fields took us directly to the Confluence. It was around 11 a.m. when we arrived at the point and by this time it was already very hot. Some locals working in the fields nearby rushed to see what we were doing. It proved to be a lengthy task to teach one of them how to make a picture of us at the Confluence and all this at temperatures of around 40°C. We finally managed and continued through the Col de Koza to Mokolo.

The Col de Koza is a very picturesque mountain pass and home of the Mafa tribe with their traditional Sares. Each Sare with their round huts is occupied by only one family. The more women a man possesses, the more round huts will be grouped together in these Sares. At Mokolo we found a very plain-looking little restaurant but to our surprise we got served one of the best chicken dishes we had eaten for a long time. After this fantastic lunch we continued to the Mandara Mountains. In the middle of this unreal looking, volcanic moon-like landscape lies Roumsiki where we stopped and spent the night. Armin arrived two hours later but had not succeeded to get to his Confluence.

What a great day! It was not only the day, also the evening was very pleasant with its cool mountain air and the clear night sky firmament with its thousands of stars.
