English narrative

22-Jan-2005 -- 15 persons with bicycles left Ekaterinburg on an electric train at 6:26 in the morning. The team is equipped with four GPS devices - two Garmin GPS 72, one Garmin GPS 12 and one Garmin eTrex Legend. In 3 hours we reached the station "224 kilometer", near the settlement Rudyanskoe. After we unloaded from the train, the GPS devices indicated that the required point is only about 1.3 kilometers away. Around us are agricultural fields. We passed to the West about 600 meters on a country road blanketed in snow. Then we turned off to the north, and continued on foot, through a field, on an old tractor track in the snow, in the direction specified by the satellite navigators. For the last few tens of meters it was necessary to leave the bicycles behind and to proceed on foot on snowy virgin soil. At the prospective point of confluence three GPS units have shown achievement of the purpose. And the fourth - Garmin 12 - is indignant demanded to pass 240 more meters to the north. And we even did so. For what reason there was such a divergence of instrument readings, needs yet to be understood. Nevertheless, for cleanliness of the experiment, the readings of all GPS units participating in the confluence search are photographed.

In the open field we trampled into the snow, at the point of crossing of integer latitude and longitude, 57°00.000'N-62°00.000'E, and went on the return route. Further on was a bicycle "holiday excursion" with a survey of local sights. We passed settlements: Rudyanskoe - we visited Kovrizhka (Gingerbread) Rock and went out on the ice of the Pyshma river, then, Brusyana, Znamenka, Shata, Sukhoy Log - between Sukhoy Log and Bogdanovich we took a small break with a fire and tea - in Bogdanovich we sat down in a train and returned to Ekaterinburg.
