"Intersections" - a new extreme kind of sport 8 December 2003, 17:03 Recently a kind of extreme sports has arisen - Confluences ("Intersections") - which is becoming ever more popular. Adherents of productive leisure, having armed with electronic maps of the area, digital cameras and receivers of the global positioning system (GPS), investigate the surface of our planet in searches of points with integer values (without minutes and seconds) of latitude and longitude. The fact is that on the Earth there are 16146 positions with whole coordinates; however, only such 3000 points are thus far described. Organizers of the project hope that within the next several years the quantity of documented "intersections" will increase several times. Any interested person can take part in the competition: for this purpose it is necessary to get a good camera, a GPS-navigator and to send a picture of the area together with the description to the site Confluence.org. However, it is possible to do without such expensive equipment. It is possible to find a treasured point by means of a usual map and a compass, though in truth, in this case the participant needs a way to measure the traversed path. It is interesting to note that the distance between any two nearest positions of "Intersections" comprises a little less than 80 km, so it is not necessary to travel far in the world in search of a point. By the way, in the territory of Russia 50 items with whole coordinates are fixed already. For example, one is located near Zelenograd (Moskovskaya oblast') - 56 degrees North latitude, 37 degrees East longitude (in a photo).
