03-Mar-2001 -- After hearing about the Confluence Project, I checked and found that the confluence closest to us, N35 W83 had not been visited. While checking out the maps, I noticed it is in a National Forest, and it appeared that a road went right over it. While the southeastern United States have been in a drought, once my son and I decided to attempt to visit the confluence, it began to rain some every week. Because we assumed the roads were dirt we kept waiting for a weekend when it isn’t raining and hadn’t rained for a few days. But this weekend (3/3/01) it started raining, but we decided to check out the condition of roads for a later attempt.

As we approach the turn off we saw a big sign that said "Duke Power Bad Creek Pumped Storage Station" (picture 3) and there is a gate across the road (picture 4). We thought "Oh no, we can’t get to it." But we pull up to the gate and read the sign which says "Notice Gate will open automatically from 6am to 6pm (day use). Public access to this site other than day use is considered trespassing" Then the gate opens and we drive in. We are going down the road expecting it to change to a dirt road at any time, but we were getting closer and closer to the confluence. The GPS reads we are within 20 feet then we are past it. We stopped and parked the truck, and start walking away from the road and the GPS indicates that is the wrong way. So we start up the road. We found that the confluence was in the road. We put a rock on the side of the road to mark it and moved the truck up close and got the camera equipment. We set up the camera on a tripod, to take our picture (picture 2) standing at the confluence, you can see the edge of the umbrella we used to keep the camera dry in the upper left corner. I then took a picture down the road which was southeast showing my son's truck that we came in (picture 5), and then a picture up the road which was northwest (picture 1). We had tried to get a picture of the GPS first but none of them came out, when it started raining harder we got in the truck and actually got a few pictures of GPS there. However when it stopped raining we got back out and started taking more pictures of GPS. The one we choose to include is the GPS setting on the yellow line in the middle of the road.
