#1: The view from the rock

(visited by Jessamyn West and Michael Stutz)

26-May-2000 -- Trying to do anything in Vermont in mud season is pure folly, especially hiking into the woods into unknown territory. We drove south from my place via a series of roads that almost-but-not-quite went where we wanted to be going. We corrected our course often. We drove by people recreating over and over again. Finally we thought we had reached the closest we would get by car, parked, and set out on foot. There was a logging road going loosely in our direction. We pushed on. The sky got cloudy. We persevered. We saw what looked to be fairly recent moose tracks. We continued, ever watchful.

At some point the road tapered out and was replaced by a swamp. We were still a bit off from our goal and hopped from grass tuft to grass tuft hoping that that underlying water wasn't too deep. At last, like an oasis in the .. um .. swamp. We saw the confluence -- a rock jutting up from the otherwise non-solid ground around us. We clamored on it and took some pictures. We headed back. "Umm, do you rememeber the coordinates of the car?"
