#1: The Confluence from 5 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

04-Sep-2016 -- This is the last out of seven reports reaching confluence points in western France. The story starts from 48°N 4°W and continues from 48°N 1°E.

This confluence is located about 15 km north-east of Orléans. My goal was to visit this confluence and then take the last train connection that would bring me back to Zurich that day.

Therefore I cycled non-stop from 48°N 1°E to this confluence within 5 hours. I approached the confluence point from the road D97 which turned out to be a mistake, because I had to traverse the forest for about 5 km on bad to non-existent tracks.

The nearest track to the confluence was this one, which was not suitable for cycling due to its uneven surface and the high grass. It had rained a bit such that the high grass had made me wet. From the track it was just 89 m to the exact location, but these 89 m turned out to be quite difficult to pass through! The density of the young forest was so high, that it took me quite a while. The trees are planted in rows, where I could have walked easily in-between – if I hadn’t had to cross the forest perpendicular to those rows.

The trees are about 10 m high and about 10 years old – mostly oak and beech.

After the confluence visit I found a very simple way to reach Orléans: straight south along the Route de l'Émérillon until I hit the road D101 that took me right into the center of the city. I had enough time left to visit the Cathédrale Sainte-Croix d'Orléans and also time to have a late lunch until my train departed to Paris. At 11 PM I was back to Zurich.
