22-Aug-2000 -- Hi folks,
One year ago I visited the first degree confluence of Germany near Arnstein (N50E10). I was really glad to discover
the small monument at that point.
Now last summer we - my spouse and I - planned a trip to Iceland. For that purpose we looked in a map to find a nice
route for travelling. I noticed that many degree confluence points were not far away from some country roads.
So I decided to visit as much points as possible, some in the north, some in the west, some in the south and some in
the east of the island.
The trouble was that we often had to change the direction because the road was in a very bad condition or we had
not enough time to drive to the point. At least there was only one degree confluence I really could visit: N65W14.
The point is in the east of Iceland, 10 kilometers east of Reydarfjördur. We arrived there two days before the ferry
took us and our car back to Denmark.
We stopped our truck beside the road .... and than I was walking up the hill for half an hour. The hill was very
steep and many plants grew on the ground, so it was really hard to walk! I was no more far away from the point when I
reached the top of a small hill ....and saw the deep canyon between me and the degree confluence! It was impossible for me
to cross the canyon! All I could do was to take some pictures from the point from a distance. You can see the exact
position on the GPS. Bad luck but I hope you'll accept this for your project.
By that time I want to tell you that Iceland is a wonderful island with all the glaciers, volcanos and hot springs.
We enjoyed our trip very much and want to come back again. Maybe I'll visit the other degree confluences then!
