#1: On the spot

(visited by Ray Worner and Paula Brinkley)

26-Jun-2005 -- I was more than interested to return to this point of confluence and to take a look at the field of cluster bombs I was told about during my first visit. I was told about the bombies being exposed when the burn-offs started in the dry season. The dry season was all but finished, however it was still a good excuse to take a trip to the country side. It was also an excuse to get back on top of the pile after the site had been visited after my first trip to 12N 106E.

Some rain had started but the weather was looking ok. So Paula and I jumped on the motorbike and headed for Kompong Cham. The entire trip went really well with the famed exception of super sore butts. (250cc off-road bikes are renowned for being such a literal pain in the butt.)

Fortunately for the local folk, there are no longer as many cluster bombs around the area and we didn’t get to see these spoken of fields. It was however, mostly these same local folks who collected them to sell as scrap metal. So although we did not see the fields of bombs, we did get to see a beautiful part of Cambodia.

It was a very long day and it was wonderful to be back in town and off the motorbike. We were once again reminded of how we promised never to do a long bike trip all in one day. This trip was a little over 400kms.
