08-Jul-2008 -- It all started with the idea of spending a week on a greek island with my son Michael. The question was which one ? We'd been on Zakyntos a few years ago and enjoyed it but decided we wanted something different. After searching through the holiday brochures we decided on either Crete or Kalymnos. It just so happens by PURE COINCIDENCE that these
are the only 2 greek islands (as far as I can see) that have a CP on them; Crete has N35 E25 and Kalymnos N37 E27.
We decided on Crete and N35 E25.
So the 5th July saw us land in Chania and get bussed to our hotel in Agia Marina. We spent a few days sunning and swimming etc. before setting off in a hire car for N35 E25 on Tuesday 8th July. After a gentle (well ok, sometime not so gentle) drive we arrived at a spot between Vagionia and Vasiliki about 500 metres from the CP. An easy 10 minute walk in the searing heat and we were at the CP amongst the Olive trees at 13:00 local time.
The zeroes were there immediately and stayed so photographing was easy - no confluence dance today. 15 minutes later we were heading back to the car for the drive home and to visit a few places on the way:
Mitropoli - just off the main road on the way back to Timbaki, looks like this is being prepared for tourists but is a long way off being ready (see pics). The monastry at Panagia Kalyviani (see pics). A dam project near ? - had intended to drive North from Spili to Patsos and visit a cave just North of Patsos but the road was unpassable in our Nissan Micra (or was it the the insurance didn't cover underbody damage) so we skirted East, North-East and North around Patsos coming across a newly built dam (maybe near Voleones). The white house will disappear for ever when the dam fills with water and the photos we took looking up to the dam will no longer be possible.
We arrived back safely in Agia Marina and continued with our sunning, swimming, eating, and drinking holiday.
