9th confluence out of a trip of 12

Continued from 51°N 2°E

Due to the closure of the airspace above Europe (caused by the volcanic ash cloud coming from Iceland) the road and ferry traffic increased substantially those days. Driving east along the A16 motorway I came across a long queue of trucks, cars, and busses waiting for embarkation in Dunkirk (French: Dunkerque). Ultimately, I got stuck in a traffic jam for some half an hour. The association with the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940 was of course false, but inevitable.

At noon I crossed the Belgian border and after 25 km I arrived in Diksmuide (French: Dixmude). The town, located on the Yser (Dutch: IJzer) river, was reduced to rubble in the First World War. During the rebuilding in the 1920s a peace monument, the IJzertoren (Yser Tower), was erected. Along with the nearby Paxpoort (Gate of Peace) they symbolise the demand for Nooit meer oorlog! (Never again war!).

After another 12 km I came to the village of Handzame. Narrow streets led me among fields to a single house located at the junction of three ways. I parked the car right at the fork of the road and looked out for the confluence point. There was a ploughed field to the right, a garden to the left, and the GPS pointed out to a 2 m high hedge between them. Whether the point was on its right or left side – I didn’t manage to figure out because the GPS readings were not very stable.

I walked the property around but didn’t meet anybody, only the penetrating odour of manure trailed in the air. It was a sunny and warm early afternoon, but the wind was blowing hard across the fields. Therefore, and because of the smell, I didn’t prolong my stay there and quickly departed for the next point.

20-Kwietnia-2010 -- W związku z zamknięciem przestrzeni powietrznej nad Europą (spowodowanym chmurą pyłów wulkanicznych nadciągającą znad Islandii) znacząco zwiększył się w tych dniach ruch kołowy i żegluga promowa.

Miasto, położone nad rzeką Yser (holend.: IJzer), zostało obrócone w gruzy podczas I wojny światowej. W czasie odbudowy, w latach dwudziestych XX w. wzniesiony został pomnik pokoju – IJzertoren.
