#1: The Confluence from 20 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

17-Nov-2014 -- This is the fourth out of 8 reports, describing confluence visits in South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho. The previous report is 25°S 31°E. The story starts at 26°S 29°E.

After spending a day with the animals (watching 3 of the ‘big five’ very closely) in Kruger National Park, we left South Africa and entered the little country Swaziland with its two confluence points. After driving 50 km in Swaziland, we reached the village Mafusini (according to the local teacher) respective Lomahasha (according to Google and previous visitors). The village is directly bordering Mozambique.

The Confluence is located within the village, which consists of rather scattered housing than a compact built-up area. Parking was possible at 80 m, right in front of a preschool. The teacher came to us and welcomed us to visit her school. Inside the building, 17 sweet little well-behaved kids were sitting around a table and freezing. Some windows were broken and the extremely cold and humid weather made it very unpleasant for the kids. We could even see our breath inside the building. After we gave a short English lesson, we contributed a bit for the repair of the windows.

We found the Confluence 70 m from the preschool at the edge of a recently ploughed field. There are some residential buildings within 100 m. The next field is bordered by high, straw-like dry grass. Due to the rainy and cold weather, no one observed us documenting the confluence point – which is probably not always the case.

We left the village Lomahasha and continued our trip into the Malkerns Valley in Central Swasiland, where we spent the night at a private bed and breakfast place.
