(visited by Karl Bryk and Heidi Peschl)

12-Aug-2016 -- This is visit number 5 in a sequence of 7 visits made while on holiday in Sweden. The previous is 58N 16E.

Day 5 of our road trip found us following the car Navi to CP 57N 16E. After Högsby we followed a newly tarmaced road through the woods which turned to gravel about 2 km from the CP.

We initially parked by a hunters view point (complete with office revolving chair) and tried to walk directly to the CP but this quickly turned into a quagmire and we retreated back to the car. We continued back along the gravel road and found the car park other visitors had used. It was quite full - which surprised us - but we managed to find a parking space. There were even 3 large camping RV's, popular in Sweden, parked there. We walked the approximately 650 metres to the CP, dodging left and right to get around the many fallen trees. It was a pleasant walk though.

The CP was located about 8 metres in the lake. This is not far, and the water looked shallow, at least initially. I took off my foot wear and walked into the lake. The spot was reached easily without camera or clothing getting wet. Usual photos were taken, socks and shoes were put back on and we headed zig zag back to the car.

It was early afternoon and we decided to sit at a table by a jetty near the car park and make some coffee and have lunch. While doing this we noticed lots of people arriving and heading off in boats to the nearby islands. We got talking to some of the visitors - 2 brothers - and it turned out it was the start of the crayfish season. They would head out in the night to check their cages for crayfish, and again in the morning. In the mean time they would be grilling and drinking Aquavit, beer, etc. Apparently 100 people drown a year in Sweden, sometimes as a result of too much celebrating on these sort of occasions.

In our conversation with the visitors we were recommended to visit Öland (which we did) and also to try Ärtsoppa - a type of soup. After a long lunch and chat we headed back to the car and started to drive off slowly. We were stopped by someone from one of the RV's - he was the son-in-law of one of the 2 brothers we had been talking to - who presented us with a tin of "Soldaten Ärtsoppa". This we had one evening a few days later and very nice it was, too.

We drove on to Öland and spent a couple of days there before heading for 57N 14E a few days later.
