04-Jul-2016 -- Siberian city trip: At the ski slope "Al'batros"

From Issyk-Kul to Lake Baikal we ride our Toyo 6000 kilometers on the Siberian Route. Passing smoking funnels, former gulags, (nuclear) test sites and a "white grave" - the Steppe of Kazakhstan offers lots of space for historical and current gigantism. On the longest road in the world within a country, we are surprised by cultural richness of metropolises of Russia between swamps, birch forests and mosquito attacks. This continues the story of 51°N 81°E.

"There are as well people living in Siberia, not only trees."

My mother follows our travels on Google Earth and Panoramio (I cannot avoid the remark that closing Panoramio is probably the biggest shut down of a community since the beginning of the Internet). Like my mother we are surprised by architectural and cultural richness beyond swamps and birches.

Our first visit was Barnaul, mining and garden city with a surprising number of architectural monuments. Thanks to Google Translate, even as foreigner you easily get a Russian phone sim card. As we still had to go a few thousand kilometers, we quickly moved on to Novosibirsk. Another Web 2.0 application helped us getting a low-cost overnight stay at Marin Park Hotel opposite Glavny station. The turquoise colored building established in the beginning of the 20th century is a main junction of Trans-Siberian Railway and Baikal-Amur Mainline.

Lot of thanks to Nathalie, Ol'ga and Anatoli, we got an accompanied city walk showing us the countless buildings and cultural monuments. Novosibirsk is the third largest metropolis in Russia with a population of almost 1,5 Million people. It is as well the most important IT center. St. Nicholas Chapel in the center of Novosibirsk was considered center of the Russian Empire during the tsardom. It was destroyed by the Soviets and rebuilt for the 100th anniversary of Novosibirsk in 1993. The geographical center has meanwhile shifted to the east.

Streets were flooded due to a heavy thunderstorm. Against lot of water we drove up to the State University of Education Science. The confluence is placed in the Inyusinsky Forest (Инюшенский бор). The driver is pleased to parked the Toyo beside a huge snowboard sign at the ski sports center Al'batros Armed by umbrella and GPS we climbed a small railing and crossed the ski slope. From the network of forest tracks we had to choose the right one. The tracks were sometimes slippery, and it is dripping from wet green leaf as in the green jungle tunnels of Sierra Leone. And there were about the same number of little beasts piercing our skin with their proboscis. The accuracy is very bad. We stumble forward and backward through the scrubs. We needed half an hour to manage to catch the zero. The security guard was complaining because he wanted to lock the "Schlagbaum”. He had to wait even longer because we had to fix a flat tire.

Next visit at Novosibirsk don’t miss: the zoo housing a liliger (???), AquaMir - the largest water park of the country, the Museum for Railway Technology, the Monument to the Traffic Light (Памятник светофору) and the Monument to the Laboratory Mouse. (Sadly the Sausage Memorial (Памятник колбасе) was already removed.)

Continued at 56°N 93°E.
