16-Sep-2018 – On one of the last warm September weekends, Andrey and me decided to make the final weekend cycling trip of the 2018 season, visiting three interesting places at once – the highest point of the Penza region, Beloye [White] lake and the confluence point 53°N 47°E. On September 15, we left Penza on an electric train towards Kuznetsk, and at 11 o'clock we arrived at the station Kuznetsk. At first we rode to the highest point of our region, located in the forest to the south-east of Kuznetsk. At that point there is a huge stone with a memorable tablet. We took pictures, had lunch and set off.

Further on we had to ride about 15 kilometers along the most heavily traffic highway in Russia, the M5 highway “Ural”. Huge trucks rushed past us, doused us with a powerful stream of air. After Yevlashevo we turned off the highway to the right towards the village of Bolshoy Truev, and rushed along the evening streets to the border between Penza and Ulyanovsk regions. Having moved across the bridge over Canadey river, we rode into the neighboring region and lost one hour, since Ulyanovsk region has MSK+1 time zone. It was remained about 5 km to Beloye Lake, but they turned out to be the most difficult, because the road went uphill and was sandy. Laden bikes stuck in the sand, it was very difficult to ride. Nevertheless, at 21.30 (local time), we entered the village of Beloye Ozero, but we had neither strength nor time to set up a tent and make a fire, so we asked to spend the night in a sanatorium, where we settled for the night in a summer hut for a small fee.

On the morning of the second day we woke up very early, at five o'clock, because it was necessary to have time to visit the confluence, to admire the Beloye lake, and to catch the Kuznetsk train to Penza, departing at 16.30. Having freed the room and handed over the keys to the administrator, we set off again. Still within the sanatorium territory, we went to the shore of Beloye Lake. The morning view was beautiful, and the water was quite warm for swimming. Going beyond the territory of the sanatorium, we again saddled our iron horses, and rushed to the confluence 53°N 47°E. According to the map, the point is located just south of Beloye Lake, about three hundred meters from the road. At 7.40, 10 minutes after leaving the sanatorium, we left the road and began to make our way through a sparse forest. According to the previous report, the confluence was located exactly in it, but in reality it turned out that a part of the forest at the confluence site was cut down, and, judging by the dividing posts, the cutting was in 2017.

At 8.05, we finally reached the confluence point. Satisfied with the results, we has lit a fire nearby, made porridge and tea, and after breakfast we rushed back. Our goal was achieved, at the first time we visited the CP outside the native Penza region, located not far from the picturesque Beloye lake. We decided not to ride through the sandy road, but to go down the asphalt road immediately to the M5. Along it we rode 30 km to Kuznetsk, and reached the train station with no rush, finishing at 15.50. It was a very interesting cycling trip, and this route is quite simple, and quite accessible to any beginner cyclist.
