19-Nov-2000 -- The confluence is located in the backyard of a private
residence. Adjacent to the confluence is: on the north,
the house itself. On the west, a line of trees that
form a fence to a field of corn. To the south, a field
of corn. To the east: a church and cemetary. The residence
is located on the west side of the small town of Ashburn,
Ontario, and is one of many such residences in the
immediate vicinity.
The closest public access is on Route 5, where one is
about 130m from the confluence [which is invisible behind
the previously noted line of trees.]
No attempt was made to ascertain the owner of the land,
nor was any attempt made to photograph the area (let
alone someone's backyard).
A photograph of a sunset, taken about 400m east of the
site from the confluence on the evening I located the site,
is available.
Editorial comment and suggestion: it is virtually certain
that every single confluence in southern Ontario is on
private or otherwise inaccessible land. I am personally
unwilling to trespass to obtain photographs *from* the
site. I will photograph *the* site, from the closest
available location. However, I am also not going to
be taking photographs of people's backyards or other
property -- there are obvious privacy and security
issues [and I'd have to obtain a property release
to boot].
Recommendation: relax the rules in the case of privately
owned land or other similar situations. Perhaps deal with
them the same way water sites are dealt with ...
