#1: A view of cactus at the confluence point

(visited by Ross Finlayson)

02-Jan-2001 -- To celebrate the "real" turn of the millenium, I spent a week vacationing in the "Los Cabos" area at the tip of Baja California Sur. Needless to say, I had to try visiting at least one confluence during my vacation.

Renting a Mexican deathtrap (a VW bug) for the day, I drove to La Paz (the capitol of Baja California Sur), then took the road towards Los Planos. This road first crosses a large hill, then flattens out as it gets near the coast. I turned left onto the road towards El Sargento. This road passes just 1.17 km from the [24,-110] confluence.

The confluence is in a flat area filled with cactus (mainly cholla and saguaro). To reach the confluence, I had to find a meandering path through the cactus. This was difficult, as I would occasionally brush up against cholla cactus, whose arms would break off and attach themselves to my clothing, arms and legs. (I was removing spines for a couple of days afterwards.)

Finally, I reached the confluence, which, of course, was surrounded by cactus. (I predict that many other confluences in northern Mexico will look just like this one!) Photos 1-3 show views from the confluence point. Photo 4 shows my GPS receiver's display at the confluence point. Unfortunately my camera decided to focus on the cactus that my GPS was sitting on, rather than on the GPS itself. Rest assured that the display says N 24.0000(+epsilon), W 110.0000 (+epsilon). (I really need to get a digital camera, so I can preview these shots.)
