05-Jun-2001 -- During our vacation we spent a few days in Rovaniemi. This confluence lies about 70 km north of the Arctic Circle.
Where the road crosses the Arctic Circle, there is a large tourist attraction called Santa Claus Park and Santa Claus Village. This is a Christmas simulation (!) all the year round.
After driving some kilometers to the north, we had to follow a small road, wich leads to only a few houses. The country there is heavily dominated by the wood industry, like many areas in northern Finland. These woods are not very exciting. Beside the road at an access to one hut a white bear was sitting, greeting the few people passing by.
The point itself lies only 300 meters beside the small road. The trees there seemed to be cut recently and only some young trees were growing again, so the forest was very sparse and the walk to the point was very easy. In these areas elks and reindeers are very common, so we sent Elgar,
our mascot, onto the point.
